My current artwork is inspired by phobias and nightmares, either my own or other peoples. I enjoy turning these dark places into paintings filled with colour and detail, for me it is about turning something that can be considered grotesque or frightening, into a thing of beauty. The majority of my work is created using acrylics and ink. I tear or cut the original drawings and recreate in the form of collage. This technique allows an added depth and occasionally disguises the subject, forcing the viewer to really look at the work, sometimes finding images they may otherwise miss.
I developed the 'Wots goin on?' Characters when I was in a band in the mid 90's. The design was for a cd cover for the band 'phobia 4000'. The characters were to represent the 4 members.
We all had our phobias and fears ranging from industrial pipes to cotton wool. As you would imagine, claustrophobia, was one of these fears. The characters on the original idea were all trying to push out of the 'box' that housed the band.....
I rediscovered the art work recently and decided to expand on the idea.
Hope you enjoy! Nicky Gayle
